The distance saved by not completing those last few laps means they don't have to use as much fuel! Everyone knows they're going to run out of petrol now, so they can hide behind that if they have yet another Hydraulics failure, they just need to make it past half-distance to have that luxury. With any luck they'll get the hydraulics fxed at the same time as they get their new chassis and no one need know that fuel wasn't the issue for their retirements in Australia, Malaysia and China. Better to put in a spectacular drive then break down, than to troll around at 3/4 speed doing nothing to catch the eye, and just generally being an annoyance for everyone. Who knows? Something crazy might occur and the car might finish against all expectations.
