Grosjean signs up for GP2 assault

by Jack Lamure on Jan 27th, 2011

Renault reject Romain Grosjean will attempt to put his name back on the F1 radar in 2011 by contesting the GP2 series for French squad DAMS.

The Franco-Swiss driver ran seven races for Renault in 2009 but found himself out in the cold last season as Vitaly Petrov joined Robert Kubica at the Enstone-based team. Grosjean subsequently raced in Auto GP, where he won the title despite missing the opening two rounds, and also contested four GP2 events for DAMS. Having once again failed to land an F1 drive in 2011 he will return to GP2 full-time.

"It's a big challenge that DAMS and I are taking up in 2011," Grosjean said of the deal. "In just a few races last year the team welcomed me with open arms, and I soon understood that we were linked by a common objective - to make it to the top!

"Today I'm counting the hours that separate me from our first test together, given the strength of my relationship with each of the team members from both a human and professional point of view. I've got no doubts about the level of performance of the cars prepared by DAMS, and I know we'll get the best out of them. We'll all chase the title together."

The 2008 GP2 Asia champion, 24-year-old Grosjean is still well respected  among F1 folk and could yet find his way back in to motorsport's top flight should he impress again in 2011.
