Perez accident mars Monaco qualifying

by Jack Lamure on May 28th, 2011

A terrifying accident for Sauber driver Sergio Perez marred today's Monaco qualifying (which has been suspended - full report on that here), though early reports from the BBC suggest that the youngster is conscious.

Perez's car snapped out of control and hit the outside armco on the run down to the Nouvelle Chicane. The Sauber then slid sideways at terrifying speed before making contact with the TechPro barriers. Camera shots from inside the stricken car showed no movement from Perez, whilst his team was unable to make radio contact with him.

However BBC pitlane reporter Ted Kravitz informed his commentary colleagues that Perez was 'concious and talking to the team.' There has yet to be any official confirmation from the Swiss squad.

Perez has a strong record at Monaco, having taken a superb GP2 win here 12 months ago - one that set him on his way to an F1 race drive in 2011. The 21-year-old Mexican had been enjoying his best qualifying session of his rookie campaign, having progressed to the third segment for the first time. Our best wishes are with him, his team and his family. Further updates will follow.

God I hope he's okay...I was watching Quali on the BBC and it was a nasty nasty accident. I was heartened to hear that he seems to be okay.

Good that he's okay, but it was a double blow for Sergio being that throughout practice he'd looked absolutely mighty around the Monaco track. As in Top 5 mighty.
