McLaren sew up victory with Button's Canadian GP

by The Badger on Jun 12th, 2011

It took a while to get going but once it did, oh my did the Canadian GP serve up a great race.  For a few laps it looked as though none-other than Michael Schumacher could have been on the podium, but no one could have seen the stunning drive from Jenson Button securing victory in the final lap.  The 2009 champion had more pit stops than Vettel has had victories this season, but somehow managed to be in the running come the final few laps.  The Canadian GP LIVE event saw everyone going crazy (more on that tomorrow) with what turned out to be one of most exciting finishes to a grand prix in years.

We also have to give a massive shout out to Felipe Massa and Kamui Kobayashi with their photo-finish for 6th.  Badger GP will have full highlights of the Canadian GP online tomorrow, but for now - here's to what became a great a grand prix and here's the final result.

Jenson on his way to stunning victory

Jenson is the Buddha of GP, man. (I think I posted that two weeks ago). He just patiently waits for his opportunities. Lewis is trying to manufacture those same opportunities when they aren't there. I love Hamilton, but I think he's letting his frustration get the better of him. If he would just stay around and let it happen, they would come. Then his skill would allow him to make the most of them. Great race Jenson!

No i don't think lewis should be persuaded to wait around he's amazing. most of the time it works sometime it doesn't. It was tough to watch him today but he'll be back and stronger for it if he stops listening to everyone and does what we know he can. Jenson what can you say? He was at the back of the field how many times? how many pitstops? i don't think i saw a mistake from him, him and schumacher were in a class of 2 today both sublime and i actually had msc for a podium on the fantasy gp so i'm double sad that he missed out

Jenson proved that you can win by remembering "There's another lap" - even when its the last lap! Lewis drives as if the race is about to end and he pays the priceby ill judged moves. It could easily have been a McLaren 1-2 yesterday One thing that does need to be addressed urgently, is the stewarding of GP's. Yesterday virtually every overtaking attempt not made under DRS was either penalised or investigated. Come on guys this is racing and these guys are racers. Years ago these were all racing incidents. I'm really surprised that you have someone like Emo on the stewards panel who endorses these silly judgements. You are ruining good racing.

Great race but it now seems they won't let F1 run in the rain any more. Why on earth we did start behind the safety car?? Why did we wait so many laps to get going? And why did we wait an eternity on the restart? It became so dry they had to put inters on.

F1 is becoming a joke where rain is concerned. The only time the safety car or red flag is needed is when there is standing water - NOT for any time the track is wet.

The Pirelli wets are pretty untested. Why did the paying public have to endure a test session?

The race will go down in history I guarantee you! Not just because of the time taken but also as a possibly one of the best displays of driving we have ever seen and it was from one Jenson Button! Letter to Badger being prepared as i type this, this is one Button fan who was dancing round his living room yesterday!

Possibly because this was the first time they've raced on the Pirelli wets. Possibly. I agree that it was a bit ridiculous - we've seen them start a race with no safety car in much worse conditions. If it happens that way again you've got to start asking questions about how sterile they want to make it, but on this occasion I think the organisers can be forgiven.
