Opinion: BBC and Sky - It's not ALL bad!
by Craig Normansell on Jul 29th, 2011The BBC has shocked many an F1 fan by announcing a new TV rights deal shared with Sky Sports. Although the BBC will still show half the races live, everything else will be on Sky Sports, a subscription based channel, ending F1's long association with being a free-to-air-sport.
But, are there any positives to come out of this deal? We've racked our brains a bit, and have tried to come up with a few.
Sky will devote more time to F1.
The BBC have a limited time to show F1. There's practice sessions on the Red Button, and then just over two hours for qualifying and three for the race. So, that's 5 hours of coverage on free-to-air telly. Sky Sports is a dedicated sports network, with 4 channels dedicated to sport, 24 hours a day. That's really a no-brainer for us hardcore fans who want to watch it consistently. And there'd be no backlash from angry Antiques Roadshow lovers when a rainstorm delays a restart, a la Canada.
Lets take Sky's football coverage. They dedicate quality time to matches, with coverage being second to none. It far outweighs BBC or ITV's.
Now, imagine that money spent on Formula One - and it will be no expense spared - and probably rightly so if they want fans to be won over! Add that to extensive highlights, probable weekly discussion shows and highlights, and recaps on weekends off, you probably will be spending money on a better way to watch F1.
Prices may be steep. But there are other options.
OK, we realise that not everyone will want to to spend money on subscribing to Sky. We've worked out that to watch every race on HD, it's going to cost Joe Average six hundred pounds. That's roughly £30 for a race weekend. That, at the moment, is just too much, especially compared to just under £7 per race due to paying the licence fee - which you have to folks, it's the law!
But, why not get around that fact?
There are free ways to watch. Yes, we said free. One is to watch online, but this can prove a little risky with some of the so-called streaming sites. We have found one - at www.filmon.com - that can provide you with free access to RTL, the German network that had F1 free until 2015. If you can understand fast, fluent German then this is the optino for you!
Most local pubs show Sky on a big screen for football, rugby, etc, why not F1 too? Think about it. Why not ring some mates up and go down to said pub, ask to put the F1 on, and watch with friends? It's more sociable, more fun and you get to talk to other fans about the sport you love. If you're a casual fan looking to watch the sport, where better than with a pint and a packet of pork scratchings? We've been doing it for Badger events, so why not hold your own - and attend ours too!
The last thing we can think of though is why not spend the money you would've spent on Sky and attend a live race?
Tickets are still available for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, a venue steeped in history that is always great fun for fans. You'll get to see your favourite driver in the flesh and hear the roar of the engines live, something that sitting in either a pub or your front room can never recreate.
Let's not forget how we got here in the first place.
The most important thing about the Sky deal is to realise just how much of a corner the BBC have been painted in to. The current government has frozen the license fee for the next 6 years, a move that hindered the BBC's growth and made it look at what needed to be cut back. And, the BBC is a massive, muti-channel, multi-coporate business that has many other areas and aspects to cover with a budget that is now frozen. We as F1 fans are lucky that we haven't paid for sport for so long, in consideration, it's the last bastion of free sport left.
It's a new dawn for F1, one that's had an initial reaction of raw anger for having to spend money on something that was cost-free for so many years. The main positive to look at is that the sport is still accessible and it's secure for the next 7 years - it's not the end of the world.

Comments and Discussion
Firstly, I have sky and it will cost an extra £10.50 per month just for the sports package, just to watch F1, ridiculous.
Secondly, I live in Spain and football is on the tv permanantly, have you tried walking into a pub and asking them to turn the football off so you can watch F1, it's impossible, the only way we could watch is by going to a pub where the owner was an F1 fan and he had been a friend of ours for many years. On top pf that, with intro etc you are looking at almost 4 hours, even a 1 pint an hour you've spent another tenner.
Attend a live race, that's about the cost of a whole years sky, what about the other 18 races, oh we won't bother watching them which defeats the object of viewing it on tv in the first place.
yeah yeah yeah but what about us lot with a family that can't afford to go to the pub every other weekend let alone find a pub that is family friendly that shows sky sports! Also we can't afford to pay the silly prices for sky and I can tell you now that I might be a woman but I'm a HUGE F1 fan and I really enjoy watching ALL aspects of Formula 1! This whole new announcement has really pissed me off in a big way! arrrggggh
The problem with showing F1 in pubs is that football, rugby and a host of other sports seem to take priority over F1. So far I've only found one venue (in London!) that consistently shows the F1 whenever its on.
Maybe this will change with increased demand for F1 if it isn't available on free-to-air, I hope so. Maybe badger can compile a list of F1 friendly pubs
Plus I think we would all agree the the current BBC coverage is second to none, I'm worried that breaking up the current F1 coverage team (as i'm sure will happen) will result in both channels having worse coverage. Its not like there are a whole host of ex-drivers and ex-team owners hanging around itching to be part of sports coverage.
Pubs will show the British Grand Prix, Monaco and probably nothing more. Pubs are all football, football, football. Also people that are under 18? and the fly away races?
I appreciate you guys trying to look on the bright side. But ideas like spending the money we would spend on Sky by going to a race is a nonsense. It's like the government charging for all local parks and the government saying "spend the money you would spend on going to this previously free park which is now not free and full of adverts and go on holiday".
Going to the pub isn't free either. You have to buy drinks and at £3+ a pint it's going to cost just as much as your Sky subscription.
I don't agree with the Sky Sports coverage being better either. The BBC F1 coverage is outstanding and Sky is totally cheesy with stupid flashy stuff flying over the screen for every minor thing that happens.
Does anyone remember Skys A1GP coverage? of course you don't.. Nobody watched it.
This is a dark day for F1.
I'm usually working when the race is on, so I record it (on Virgin Media I might add) and watch it when I get home. I now won't be able to do that, and due to said working I also can't go to the pub to watch it. So like many other people, I would assume, I'm stuck in a rut and will have to settle with the highlights. Not good. Not good at all.
Is anyone going to get Sky Sports?
Pubs are open at 2am??? There are plenty of races in hours that pubs aren't open too. It's shit for F1 - at FOTA forums Whitmarsh was adamant that PayTV was not good for F1 at all!
I don't agree with you on the BBC's coverage. Sure the commentary itself is OK, but the pre-race features are pathetic. I prefer ITV pre-2007, the features were concise, straight to the point, less stupid "atmospheric" shots, and they didn't explain the rules & regs to you again every 20mins. The BBC's coverage treats us like dumb football fans.
I have become a little weary of the O.T.T drama sequences they use. It's a small pain in an otherwise excellent product though
This basically means that I for one will take 6 years out of watching F1. I love the sport but I don't have Sky and don't intend to get it for a host of reasons.
It's a shame really as I like the sport a lot, it's a real highlight of my weekend, but being only able to see half the races is pointless. You might as well not bother.
If the bbc need to save money because of the licence fee freeze, why dont they shut down one of the many obscure channels that show nothing but repeats of shows that may be 1% of the population watch.
Its more the attitude of the whole coverage I dont like. Just treating us like we're stupid. I watched the 2006 Italian grand prix from ITV a while ago, and I was surprised at how concise and straight to the point it was. They didn't look into every single minute detail.
I'm really p*ssed with the deal, Over £600 a year to watch F1 live is a p*ss take. Does that take into account your still paying your tv licence as well? Why the hell couldn't the BBC just decrease the build up to qually and the race and shift it say BBC 3 or BBC 4? with digital taking over by 2012 everyone will have digital channels?! Surely there must have been some simplier way to keep everyone happy not just the accountants?! I think this is going to hit F1 as a whole hard. Viewing figures are going to drop!
I do agree that viewing figures will drop, because people won't want to get sky just to watch F1. However, I intensely dislike the BBC's coverage, so hopefully Sky's might be geared towards the more... knowledgeable fan perhaps?
It has to cater for the newcomers. They'll switch off if it's too complex; the hardcore will keep watching even if it's being over simplified.
I think you are straw clutching trying to put a positive spin on this!
Do you really think a pub is going to show the F1 (on sky sports 3/4 probably) instead of "Ford Super Sunday Football"!
I love F1, but I am not willing to spend my hard earned money having to watch sport! Sport should not be about money, it should be free to air so that everyone can watch and enjoy the brilliance that is human beings competing in whichever sporting discipline it may be!
@Jimmy The hardcore fan will watch it if its the only option, but if better-suited coverage is available, id watch that even if it means paying for it.
Perhaps that's how Sky will try to position their coverage. I can't see it, but it would be a good idea for them to do so.
If they get Ben Edwards and John Watson in, I will watch it just for that.
Edwards is mega - that would be a draw. But again, that's a hardcore fan draw,
I spent 5 years working in a pub and there wasn't a hope in hell that F1 would get a look in over football/rugby/cricket/basket weaving. Even out of the football season somebody would come in and ask for some obscure football being shown by SkyFootball(sports).
I will not be adding Sports to my subscription even for the only sport I love.
Maybe a boycott of Sundays GP TV coverage would produce a show of defiance based on the dip in viewing figures.
I was really disappointed to hear the news, I think the BBC have been doing a good job with their coverage, and as has been pointed out, it'll be hard to find a pub that will show the races, not to mention qualifying. Personally, I'll either try to see if any foreign channels will have it on or try and find some kind of coverage online.
Just like to point out that it's not 'the law' that you have to have a tv license. If you don't watch any LIVE tv then you don't need one. You're still allowed to watch everything on iPlayer at a later date.
Heh, I went to a pub to ask them to a show a Championship football game. "No chance, Spurs are playing". I really doubt ANY pub that wants to stay in business will favour Alonso [Fernando] over Alonso [Xabi].
So, not only will we likely be headed back to the "We'll be back after these messages" ITV F1 advert era (and ad breaks on Sky seem to be bloody long...), but we're going to have to pay sit and watch those ads too?
The Beebs coverage over the last few years; while not exactly pushing techy information for the serious fans, HAS secured lots and lots of new fans. Even my sister, who watches Emmerdale and Eastenders has started to watch it. Had the BBC gone the other way and aimed for the hardcore, this deal would have happened even earlier than before.
As many other have said, there's ZERO chance of getting the pub to turn over from the footy (or music channels on mute) for them to put on the F1 unless you're a regular. And even then, it'll be a big ask...
The BBC should really try to scrape some money from else. Kill some of the radio stations off. Who really listens to 3 Counties? Or Radio 4 Extra?! And stop making some of their useless programmes. "Escape To The County"? Should be called "I'm Rich & Have No Interest In Buying These House, But Thanks For The Tour Of The Countyside, BBC".
OK, maybe that title was a bit long...
By showing a subset of the races, the BBC is giving a preview of the
content available on Sky. Once a viewer takes a more serious interest
in the sport, it is conceivable that the viewer will opt to watch all
races, thereby acquiring Sky's package. In other words, the BBC is
doing some type advertising for Sky. The BBC is a public company; Sky
is privately held. So a publicly-owned company will be doing
advertising for a private company. This is unethical and thus the
BBC-Sky scheme should be rejected.
How can F1 ever be a dominant feature of the network when half of the races are available for free? All they'll end up with is disgruntled fans who have just paid £30 when they could get it free on another channel.
And who's to say the BBC won't stick with their decent commentary and presenters and Sky choose second rate personnel?
Paying £600 to half a season with a Legard?? Good God please no. If that was the case, you'd effectively be paying £300 NOT to listen to someone like that.
This is a pathetic compromise. It can only work for the viewers AND Sky if they charged £10 a race, not a subscription to a whole package.
Whatever Sky say, they're going to be the B team if the BBC don't farm out their presenters.
Brundle said in a Tweet today that his contract is up at the end of the year, didn't he? Sky are going to do everything in their (considerable) power to poach him, contract or no contract.
Really scraping the barrel with this article guys. The football argument is insane. Football wins over F1 in a pub every time.
It's a real shame. I've been thinking about it most of the day and can't find a positive spin, despite the.optimism of this article. F1 has become a big deal again nouw, but only being able to watch half a season with lower production values is going to lose all the casual viewers gained. In a few years F1 will be a minority sport again, which will be a real shame given the talent on the grid
Looks like there will be a lot more Badger GP parties over the next 7 years then....
I wonder why Eurosport wasn't in the deal. They already cover the support races on the Sunday, it would have been an epic day of coverage with the F1 as well...
I wonder if this is one of Bernie's little power games. Think what happened when the GP was taken from Silverstone to Donington, the public backlash was huge, Silverstone eventually bowed to pressure, took out simply staggering loans to redevelop to Bernie's specs, and now it is back where he probably wanted it all along. (Donington is still knackered btw...)
This could be the same, he might be agreeing to a deal with a pay channel knowing that the public backlash will be biblical in response, forcing the BBC to honour their contract and keep the coverage on free to air..... Just expect a supercilious smirk and a denial of knowledge of everything when asked though....
Good article, the only I don't like about it going to sky is the loss of jake, dc, eddie and the rest of the bbc f1 crew, they do such an amazing job at providing us inside info that I'll be sad to see them go!
Watching half the races on the BBC is better than watching none at all, or having to pay to watch any of them. It is a shame if this does happen, but that is just the way that all sport is now. Unfortuanatley whoever pays the most gets the deal.
Why are the Beeb showing any of the races ? There is really no point as anyone wishing to watch the championship in its entirety will have Sky and Sky sports .
After all why only show half of anything ? Would you watch half of Wimbledon or half of the World cup for example ?
A complete money making cop out by the Beeb and yet more money grabbing from the Dwarf !
How much drivel can be spoken by a supposed F1 fan is beyond me. Firstly the BBC had a contract with the FIA until the 2013/2014 season for full free view broadcasting. The BBC has sold this off to SKY.
Remember that as licence payers we have paid for this - do we get a refund - NO.
Of the twenty-four pubs in our vicinity only two have sky sports available and they will only show football at the weekends.
A viewing audience of 6 million nationally and 50 million world wide were not consulted by the BBC prior to entering this new contract.
The BBC coverage of the sport is second to none and is used by all the teams on the pit lanes as the most accurate appraisal of the race.
SKY is sponsor led and therefore who can tell where the bias of accuracy will lie.
I personally cannot afford the extra monthly costs of purchasing the SKY basic package plus the SKY sports package plus as has been intimated the PAY for VIEW for each race on top of these outlays.
If the BBC want to look at cost cutting they should sack Barbera Slater for a completely uninformed and manic approach to customer relations.
THERE IS NO ADVANTAGE IN THIS DEAL FOR THE AVERAGE TV LICENCE PAYER.
BARBER SLATER MUST GO! AND THIS SHOULD BE THE IMMEDIATE AIM OF ALL F1 FANS.
THIS IS THE FIRST POINT OF THE WEDGE TO ENABLE NEWS CORP TO COMPLETE IS DECLARED INTENTION TO TAKE OVER FROMULA ONE IN IT'S ENTIRETY.
WRITE TO THE BBC, E-MAIL THE BBC, SHOUT AT THE BBC AND DECLARE THAT WE THE SPORTS FANS WILL NOT PUT UP WITH THIS UNDERHAND APPROACH TO OUR PLEASURE.
As it stands they will be showing all the the races - ten will be live with full coverage, the rest will be delayed transmissions.
People need to calm down a bit and wait to see how it pans out.
Either way, you will be able to watch every f1 race next season whether you take on a Sky subscription or not.
Not according to the beebs website . They promise extended highlights , NOT delayed transmissions of the whole race .
Firsty people must remember that the coverage we get at the moment of the races and qualifying are nothing at all to do with the BBC . They get the same live feed as the rest of the world . The only thing that the BBC do is the preamble and after race show .
This, and all of the commentary. The video footage of the race itself is supplied to all broadcasters by the FOM, but Brundle, Coulthard, Ted etc. are all BBC. On Sky, you'll see the same thing, but you'll have different commentators.
Personally i'd have been happy if the BBC sacked EJ, Jake, Lee, and all but 5 of the production team, leaving just DC + MB to do the commentary, and the programme start 15mins before lights-out. Then finish 10mins after the champagne with no forum.
The BBC will do what suits the BBC, not what fans or viewers might like. It's time to be making a fuss over the TV licence which would be £50 if the BBC services weren't mandatory, that would leave plenty spare to buy a Sky Sports package for when it switches over there permanently.
Unlike Football fans, F1 supporters are not moronic thugs, none of us are going to set fire to the MD's car, or bundle the decision-maker into the back of a Transit. It's for this reason that channels quite happily keep tossing our sport around.
hahaha if you think sky will do a more indepth show you are very much out of luck, If you thought jonathan legard was a bad commentator wait till you see the entire sky f1 team. Nice one really first thing thats made me laugh all day.
All i can say is in the words of james hunt buuuuuuulllllll sh!t. If i watch any f1 next year it will be on illegal live streaming websites. Im not paying for sky sports and i wont be watching the bbcs show if they can only be botherd to broadcast half the season.
I have no intention of paying to watch F1 on Sky. I also have no wish to watch half the F1 season on the BBC. And I certainly have no wish to watch edited highlights, especially as I work Sunday nights and haven't a hope in hell's chance of seeing it until sometime late on Monday. If this goes ahead, for me, F1 is finished and I will find something else to occupy my time on Saturdays and Sundays. A sad end to following F1 for over 30 years.... Even my Dear Lady is upset, and she just tolerates me watching it....
as a sky subscriber and an avid f1 fan i have no problems with the switch but i would like to know how the coverage team would work?
watching the BBC coverage is so exciting i dont see how sky could replicate this? its either wait a few races to see the likes of DC EJ or have the likes of Ben shepard and jamie redknapp covering a sport that they have no interest in!
and i speak for the volumes of fans and agree that F1 will not work in a pub when ther ford super sunday is on the same time? or what pub is open for the 5am start of the asian races?
I was thinking the same thing too.
What I've settled on is this; it's the best deal the BBC can come up with in their present financial situation. Sky were going to take the rights 100% in 2013 anyway, so this way half the races are still on free TV until 2018. That's five years extra than originally thought.
Also, who's to say once the BBC have relocated up north, by which time the licence fee freeze would have finished, that the corporation would bid for 100% rights again?
I don't think many pubs are open at 5am! I was talking about afternoon races.
It seems with the shared coverage, the early morning ones will be covered by Sky, and the European ones by the BBC. So, there will be no need to get up really early for BBC viewers for Malaysia, China, etc as the highlights, maybe even the whole race re-run I assume, will be on early afternoon.
Christain Horner described it as delayed transmission - it depends on how you want to look at it .
Does anyone know yet what the F1 Teams Sponsors view on this is.
A negative response from them could be even more detrimental to FI than the TV fans revolt.
There is no chance that my local pubs would show F1 especially as it is frequently on at the same time as football, no contest I'm afraid...
In addition it is unclear what Sky channel the F1 will be shown on, football now seems to be spread around their four sports channels - if you are with one of the cable firms and pay for Sky Sports 1 & 2 (and there is football on the same day) then you may still be unable to see F1 if it is on Sky Sports 3 or 4. There also appears to be no definitive answer on the BBC's deferred race or extended highlights issue, the likelihood of this is that it would surely be on BBC3 but would they really be prepared to show 75-100 mins of footage primetime on Sunday evening? I doubt it but nobody seems to know/care.
But F1 fans should not give up on their sport and feel compelled to pay Sky if they do not want to or can't afford to. A free-to-air digital satellite kit which can receive Germany's RTL channel can be picked up reasonably (way cheaper than a year of Sky Sports), their production is excellent and Kai Ebel's fashion sense is almost as bad as EJ's. Yes the commentary is in German (but hopefully you could still listen to 5Live radio commentary) and you will get ads but think of the saving! And the continued joy of watching all races live, highlights (extended or otherwise) just ain't the same (F1 sponsors and teams please take note)...
There is no way the sky coverage will be better than the BBC coverage, and if you go to the pub and only buy 4 pints, for 10 races plus quali a year, at £3 a pint, that's £240 a year, twice as much as the licence fee and almost half as much as the extortionate sky coverage, with NONE OF THE OTHER CHANNELS.
Next year I'll be at university, in student accommodation, studying to hopefully become an engineer in F1. Even if I could afford Sky I couldn't have it, the halls wouldn't let me screw a satellite dish to the roof. So unless I find a pub that will show the races, and shell out for drinks there, I can only watch half of the races live, even though I want to be in F1 when I get my degree? What kind of message does this send out to aspiring racing drivers, engineers and mechanics?
Would the BBC stop a football match halfway through, then show the rest on highlights later that evening to save money? It might not be so bad were the BBC not championing this new format, saying they're 'delighted' to be showing half a championship and the presenters completely ignoring the subject this weekend. Viewing figures are at a 10 year high but they will nosedive with this new deal.
I hope Bernie and Murdoch are happy, they're the only ones who benefit from this. Just a couple of rich, selfish old fools.
The whole thing sucks thanks to eclestone and murdoch the greedy old gits
This is Goodbye F1 now. Think about it. Sky will be showing ALL the races next year; BBC half of them. WHat happens if SKY buy out the rights as is rumoured. Do you think anyone else will get a look in? No, this is a last present from the Tories to Murdoch; by insisting on budget cuts at the BBC, this was always a likely outcome and Sky have coveted F1 for years. And what was the "bidding process"? Were ESPN asked to bid for rights?
But we can show some dissent. No one should take out a Sky subscription. If viewing figures drop, sponsors, etc. will not be happy; Pirelli have already intimated this. Write to sponsors, like Vodafone and tell them you are not using their service if F1 is not F-T-A. As has already been stated, its unlikely pubs will show F1 over football, but I watch NASCAR on any one of a number of justinTV channels, it may be that F1 will surface on something like that.
What really sticks in my throat is the cowardly BBC attitude; not one mention of this in yesterdays Qually session and in the papers the best quote was "By doing this (Cutting F1) we have saved the Wimbledon broadcasts"
Nice one.
Exactly right, John. The BBC waste licence fee money on their pretty crappy Freeview channels showing 3rd-rate repeats of repeats of repeats, ditto the other channels on freeview too. It's all 'PC' hogwash!
Martin & David are an excellent commentary team (at last!) same goes for the pit-lane team-'If it ain'y bust, don't fix it'!
I receive all the sport channels, so this doesnt really bother me. Sky have already said there will be no ad breaks during the race. BBC have hinted that non-live races will be shown in full later in the day.
Well, no. It depends on who's right and who's wrong. It's far more likely that Horner would have missunderstood than the BBC get that wrong.
I for one welcome our new phone tapping Murdoch overlords......... As long as they stick to the no ads during the race policy. Which whilst on that subject in their defence they only place ads in sport during the half time events when there is no action and everyone is making a cuppa!
It was unrealistic at best to expect F1 to remain free to air forever, it's not the way Television works anymore! If you were to launch the BBC now in its current license fee model, it would fail, quickly!
I don't currently receive the sports channels but i have been gagging for an excuse to get them due to the football and the cricket, and now F1 so now i can justify the cost. I would however preferred to see a box office type setup for the F1 where you can pay say £2 per race.
All the whining in the world isn't going to change it! Do we think Bernie really cares if he loses 100,000 odd viewers? What will the pickup be when sport heads watching Sky Sports regardless of what's on start seeing ads for the F1 coverage and start tuning in when they normally wouldn't have?
Also one other point, we are only seeing comments from those who don't already have Sky Sports (bar one I think)
Those who watch F1 and already have Sky Sports probably don't care as they already have the package and it wont cost them any more to watch the Motorsport they love..... Just sayin'
Of course people who already have sky sports aren't going to be bothered. But the people who cannot afford sky are getting shafted. Even some sky subscribers may not have the sports package which comes at an extra cost. Plus, given that Sky Sports 1 and 2 often show football at that time, the F1 may be pushed onto Sky Sports 3, which isn’t even with the basic Sky Sports package.
You said, and others keep saying, that F1 is currently free to watch. Well it's not. The F1 GP is the only thing i ever watch on TV anymore, and I pay a licence fee for the privilege. As far as I am concerned, why should I pay the whole fee when I am only getting half a season in return? There were so many alternatives, such as your aforementioned Box Office pay per view comment. They could have cut Friday practise and the F1 Forum to save costs. They could have reached out to another terrestrial channel for partnership.
Comment of the week!
That's what people are so angry about. We can all appreciate that if the BBC is struggling and need to cut costs in order to keep the F1 in one form or another, then so be it.
Sure, any solution would have been met with criticism, but this remedy has been badly conceived, and poorly handled.
We have to pay the licence fee by law. So we expect a level of quality entertainment.
Winging Poms honestly “ooh I’m all upset and put out because I have a choice of F1 coverage” get a grip ladies and gents, take a long hard look.
I’d happily swap my F1 coverage (Australian Channel Ten/One) for either of your options in a second. My coverage has an ad break every ten laps for about 2 laps so I miss about 20% of the action anyway, yes the race is covered live (only a recent innovation) but it’s so frustrating, thank goodness for the F1 live timing on the web.
The way I see it you have 2 choices either put up and shut up with the reduced however excellent BBC coverage to turn to the dark side and stump up the cash, last time Sky had a crack at F1 I paid for the “pleasure” and it did change the way I watched the race especially with all the Red Button bell and whistles like being able to follow a driver or choose a camera feed and stick with it.
Well... I love the BBC coverage right now and I am quite savvy about F1. They keep the entertainment on a high, F1 is alive again, because it is attracting newcomers to the sport every weekend. Sometimes they talk about silly stuff, fair enough, but they keep us glued to the screen. I always look forward for the Pre-race, race and post-race coverage.
It's a pity BBC won't be able to keep F1 on telly. If it were a conflict with the air time, then why can't they still use the Red Button for the races? It works with others sports... I would be happy with it. Anyway... I moving out of the country, so I will not be affected.
There has been a lot said about the fact that premiership football has been on subscription TV for many years so F1 fans shouldn't complain, but my major bone of contention with this statement is that it is somewhat easier to nip to see my teams latest home game that isn't being televised (assuming your not some sort of glory supporting man utd fan from Devon!), than it is to 'nip' to a different country/continent to watch the F1.
I'll be utilising (and contributing to) the parents Sky package to watch the races next year and i already have my ticket for next years British Grand Prix, which as people have pointed out costs almost as much as the Sky package necessary to watch next years coverage in HD, however, as an avid fan of F1 I would be willing to spend this kind of money to watch the sport i love so dearly if i didn't already have access to Sky. I appreciate that not everyone can afford/doesn't want to have to pay for Sky, but looking at some peoples comments of boycotting the sport and its sponsors could have absolutely the opposite effect of what they are trying to achieve. Why would any free to air channel want to broadcast a sport with bugger all sponsors and diminished viewing figures? At the end of the day its must be mentioned that it was the BBC that caused this situation not Sky. Sky merely bid on a product that was available at the time due to the BBC being skint. Even if the likes of channel 4 or 5 had bagged the coverage instead i dare say we'd all be complaining just as much about one thing or another.
The bar has been set quite highly regarding quality of coverage by the BBC but with the signing of Mr Brundle Sky have signaled their intent, and the fact we'll get a whole channel dedicated to the sport was more than i thought we'd get, so bring it on.Let's not judge Sky's broadcast quality until at least March next year......football and rugby coverage is what it is due to the nature of the game, as we know F1 is a much more dynamic sport to watch and hence the coverage is totally different. Plus I've been unfortunate enough to have watched coverage in Spain and France and we don't know how lucky we are.
One way of getting around this is for a few people to chip in for a single subscription where possible and just have all your mates pile round to one persons house every race weekend. Not always practical i know but i have people round for the race, which creates a more enjoyable viewing atmosphere and plus the beers considerably cheaper!
Everyone is moaning about the pubs not showing F1/not being open. Hello? Did you see the bit about watching it free on RTL? (My suggestions BTW - thanks badger for incorporating it). If anyone has every actually watched RTL, it's alright stuff - even if you can't understand German. A lot of it consists of Tanja swooning over the drivers, but if you can put up with that, its a bit of fun - not so much technical like the BBC, but even without knowing German, you can get the gist of it! A few examples I've found round the interwebs - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgBFsA4Bqec http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EVQgd8Zok4Q
well, i have an idea, i dont know if it will work but, the bbc are still broadcating over radio 5 live at every race, so you could put the RTL streaming over the internet on and listen to the radio? i might try it on the first race to see if it works.
Thanks for the filmon link!
I <3 you Badger
