The Year of the Finger - Vettel's Journey to the Title

by Adam Milleneuve on Oct 9th, 2011

2011 has seen great racing, with many Sunday afternoons featuring superb, edge-of-the-seat action. Throughout it all one man has dominated: 9 victories from the first 14 races isn't bad, is it? Now, at round 15 in Japan, he's become the 2011 World Champion, making him the youngest double-title winner in Formula 1 history.

The only thing that has been as consistent as his car's performance this season has been his celebration. Yes, you guessed it, it's Sebastian Vettel's "the finger", and here's our special tribute to him (and it!) in pictures - welcome to The Year of the Finger.

Australia - the first finger of the year points high into the sunset skyline around Melbourne.

Malaysia - a second race and a second win - the finger comes back again

China - there's a surprising lack of finger action due to Hamilton's victory, instead a half-hearted smile

Turkey - back on top and tasting Turkish delight in Istanbul with victory no.3

Spain - an exciting race in Barcelona (for a change), and yet more finger action from the young German

Canada - no finger - only a hand  - after losing victory on the last lap to a rejuvenated Button

Europe - the Valencia circuit produced another dull race, but Vettel still had his finger moment

Great Britain - no finger, just a hand for only the third time all year as Alonso scoops victory

Germany - Vettel's home grand prix, but no homecoming for his finger and no podium

Hungary - not a finger in sight from Seb, but Jenson's got plenty on show with his special victory

Belgium - the finger returns with another victory as his title prospects already look very promising indeed

Italy - The finger is pointing with his 10th victory out of 14 races

Singapore - The finger is out again - only 1 more point needed to be champion
