A miserably and soggy day’s practice for this Sunday’s British Grand Prix saw Romain Grosjean and Lewis Hamilton lead the way in terms of pace, but it was Sauber’s Kamui Kobayashi who provided some rays of sunshine in an otherwise dreary return for the fans.

The Japanese driver was sometimes sideways as he made the most of the conditions. While other cars lost their grip – notably Bruno Senna’s Williams in the afternoon session, written off so badly it caused a red flag for 10 minutes – the usual suspects were at the sharp end.

Hamilton, who won in similiar conditions 4 years ago, was on the pace from the word go. Setting the 3rd fastest time in the morning – only 6-tenths off of Grosjean’s time – he went faster to beat Kobayashi to top spot later in FP2. The partisan home crowd will be hoping that this is a sign of things to come for the weekend ahead.

Thanks to the limit on wet-weather tyres – teams are only allocated 3 sets per race weekend – some drivers played the conservative card. Fernando Alonso and both Force Indias (Jules Bianchi sitting in for Nico Hulkenberg) failed to set a time in the morning, while Grosjean, Mark Webber, Pedro De La Rosa and Daniel Ricciardo (who had gone 2nd quickest in FP1) all sat out the afternoon’s running.
