This week’s Autosport International sees the launch of MotorsportXS, a new service that intends to make “motorsport more accessible and affordable to fans”. The company has been created by Nora Clifford, who has a background in global service operations, and long-term motorsport fans David Clifford and Chris Thompson. Before the launch, I had a chance to ask the founders a few questions about their vision for the service and the sort of company they are trying to build.
First things first, what is the service and how is it going to make motorsport affordable and accessible? For a small annual fee, members will have access to discounts and other incentives, such as reductions in merchandise, access to experience days etc. By making it more accessible, of course they are looking to provide a way for their partners to reach more people. The final element in the mix is that part of the profits are going to charity. Does it sound interesting? What’s driven you to create this company?
Our primary focus is to make motorsport more accessible and affordable for fans. Luca Di Montezemolo was quoted as saying in September 2011, “For me, for Ferrari, the circuits are crucial. I want to see spectators, I want to see passion, I want to see flags.”, while ticket discounts are a high profile benefit of being a motorsportXS member,there are many other benefits that will help fans to continue to enjoy their chosen form of motorsport. These include significant discounts on merchandise, experience days, art, magazines and gaming to name but a few.
We have worked very hard for the last year to bring motorsportXS to reality with the help of forward thinking partners in the industry, together we aim to make a real difference for fans. For a nominal annual fee, fans enjoy access to the incentives on offer. The full benefit of our incentives are passed on directly to the fans from our industry leading partners, motorsportXS does not take any commission.
As part of our corporate social responsibility policy, we have also committed to donating a percentage of our profits to
charities. motorsportXS has a carbon reduction policy and has chosen carbon offsetting/donation as a way of contributing to mitigating our own and the motorsport industry’s impact on our environment. We have committed to doing this via PURE, which is a carbon offset charity. Our other charity will be announced in the forthcoming weeks.
So how much is it going to cost me?
There are two tiers, Member and VIP. The Member fees are currently £20 GBP / €25 EUR / $35 USD. The VIP fees are currently £50 GBP / €60EUR / $85 USD. VIP membership provides additional access to high-end services that include, but are not limited to; original art, luxury products and access to hospitality solutions. This membership fee can be easily recovered in one transaction, we also have a referral programme that can reduce the renewal fee to zero.
But why should a fan sign up?
In these tough global economic times where the cost of fuel, energy,food and other everyday items are rapidly increasing, seemingly on a daily basis, motorsportXS helps them to continue enjoying their chosen motorsport series.
motorsportXS membership has many appealing incentives for a wide range of fan; should they simply want to buy their favourite team’s shirt or cap, subscribe to a magazine or they want to attend races, our ‘Member’ tier is perfect. If they would like to enjoy the additional benefits of original art, hospitality and luxury products, then the ‘VIP’ tier is for them. Either way, there is something for everybody.
As we increase our membership this will also put us in a stronger negotiating position to leverage further benefits for the fans.
Finally, they can also be happy in the knowledge that they are supporting our chosen charities, as a part of their fee will be donated to the charities, helping to make a real difference.
That’s the core business stuff done…what was the most fun part of creating it?
Actually creating something that we feel passionate about ourselves. We’ve chatted to many motorsport fans around the world as
we’ve been creating this concept and listening to their feedback. Their enthusiasm has been inspiring and has spurred us on to get to where we are today.
Which is your favourite offer?
We’ll leave this one to the fans to choose their favourite partner from the 62 that we have at launch.
What other offers are you trying to get?
At launch we have a strong mix of partners. We are being very careful to ensure that we deliver value to our existing partners, therefore, we have to ensure a good fit within the existing portfolio for any new partners.
That said, we are in ongoing discussions with a number of other high profile partners, in particular a controversial one that the fans in the UK have been talking a lot about over the last few months. We are also keen to work with circuits around the globe to work with them on bringing motorsport more focused back on to the fans.
I couldn’t get them to tell me what the controversial offer is, but I’d hazard a guess it’s something to do with Sky F1 coverage, given the many conversations I’ve seen about that. From our discussions, they are very passionate about the new company and believe they can bring something different to the sport, whether you are a fan of F1, MotoGP, SBK, BTCC, NASCAR or IndyCar.
