The diminutive Fernando has carried on the incredible form that saw him haul a below par Ferrari into title contention last year by making up 4 places to get that podium he desperately wanted. While the win was there, Kimi Raikkonen just had too much pace bottled up ready to use in the Lotus – each time the Ferrari edged closer, Kimi just set an equal, or faster, lap time.
What this has done is settled the boat nicely in Maranello. Imagine if Ferrari had the kind of weekend McLaren had – heads would have surely rolled almost immediately.
The most impressive part of Fernando’s race was the decision to make the early pitstop on lap 20. It got him ahead of Felipe Massa (which was a given, if we’re truly honest), Sebastian Vettel and the impressive Adrian Sutil, which was key to making his strategy work.
Not only is he quick, but he’s smart. That’s why we’re learning to respect him more and more each race.
