Finally, we get to hear what title music Sky have chosen for their F1 coverage. We knew it wouldn’t be the chain, but no one (as far as we know) predicted this song… it was first used by the BBC for their end of season montage in 2010 – now Sky are using it for the soundtrack to their opening titles.  The archive footage is great – but what do you make of the song choice?

Alistair Griffin’s ‘Just Drive’

More info from Sky F1:

Alistair Griffin’s ‘Just Drive’ is the title music for Sky Sports coverage of Formula 1TM and will feature on the brand new channel’s opening titles.

The track, originally released in 2010, has been re-recorded for Sky Sports F1TM HD and now features the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and young singers from Berkshire-based Rodolfus Choir.

Just Drive 2012 will be the soundtrack to the opening titles on Sky Sports F1TM HD which includes scenes from 32 Grand PrixTM races between 1950 and 2011. F1TM legends feature throughout the 43 second sequence including Fangio, Schumacher and Stewart, finishing with celebratory footage of memorable winners over the years. The opener is available in full exclusively on today.

Sky Sports F1TM HD producer Martin Turner said: “The archived footage of Formula 1 is the most evocative of any sport. There have only ever been 32 world champions and every one of them, a global sporting icon. Pictures of these heroes are some of the most compelling images in sporting history and we wanted to honour that history in our opening titles.

“The track adds to that sense of history & drama. The first time I heard Just Drive, I loved it and every time you hear it you love it more and more. It fits for both the modern and historic context of Formula 1 and I’m sure our viewers will like it.”

Singer-songwriter Griffin said: “F1TM was the inspiration behind Just Drive and I always hoped it would strike a chord with fans of motorsport. To have Sky Sports F1TM HD take Just Drive as its theme tune is absolutely amazing. There is a history of anthemic songs associated with F1TM and I would love for Just Drive to become one of those songs.”

The track will first be heard on Sky Sports F1TM HD, channel 408, on Friday 9 March 2012 at 8pm for The F1TM Show – 2012 Preview. The channel will be the only place viewers can enjoy live coverage of the whole Grand PrixTM season, including all practice and qualifying sessions and every race in the calendar.

Sky Sports unveiled its line-up of talent for the new channel in December. Commentary will be provided by Martin Brundle and David Croft with expert analysis from Damon Hill and Anthony Davidson. Ted Kravitz and Natalie Pinkham are the pit-lane reporters while coverage is presented by Simon Lazenby. Georgie Thompson will also host a brand new Formula 1TM magazine show each Friday evening during the season.

Sky Sports F1TM HD will take viewers closer to Formula 1TM than ever before, with more action, analysis and information available on TV, online and mobile devices. Through Sky’s interactive service, available by pressing the red button on the Sky remote, fans can follow the action through on-board cameras, go behind the scenes with the teams in the pits, and follow race data, to take them further inside the sport.

Up to six days of coverage of each Grand PrixTM will also be offered by Sky Sports News HD whilst skysports.comand @skysportsf1 will provide extensive coverage throughout the season.

Sky Sports F1TM HD will be provided at no extra charge to all Sky TV customers who take both Sky Sports 1 and Sky Sports 2 or who take Sky’s HD pack of channels. It will be found at 408 on Sky’s on-screen guide, after a scheduled move of the Sky Sports channels. Sky Sports viewers without the Sky+ HD pack will receive a standard definition version.
