Not the most conventional choice being as he finished in 13th, but Heikki Kovalainen put in a blinding shift yesterday. The Caterham driver spent the entire race keeping Jenson Button’s McLaren in his rearview mirrors which, despite the tough-to-pass nature of Monte Carlo, is no mean feat.
Indeed, what this meant was Heikki nailing every apex and exit for an hour and a half while a much faster car bore down on him. Impressive.
And he did it all for no reward, ending the race down in 13th. Still, that was enough to vault Caterham up to that magical 10th spot in the constructors standings, a result that may well prove absolutely crucial come the end of the year.
Yes he was perhaps a bit overly robust in his defence but given the disparity in equipment that’s hardly surprising. Ultimately the Finn worked his socks off and can be thoroughly pleased with his finish – and the much-coveted Top Dog award.
